Mercer preparation for Auburn not affected by Irma

Coming off their first loss of the season to Wofford on Saturday, the Mercer Bears went right back to work Sunday.

With that being their regular setup — practice Sunday and off day Monday — the Bears didn’t see their schedule affected much by Tropical Storm Irma as it ripped through Macon on Monday.

The Bears play their first game against an SEC program at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Auburn, which lost Saturday night at Clemson.

“The kids just rested all day (Monday), and then we got a great session in (Tuesday) morning at practice,” Mercer head coach Bobby Lamb said. “So it really hasn’t affected us a whole lot because our cafeterias remained opened, which is great. The kids are here on campus; they get plenty of rest. Obviously, I told them, ‘Hey, you gotta go to class (Wednesday), so you better start studying.’ ”

Looking to bounce back

Fort Valley State hasn’t played since opening its season with a loss to West Georgia on Aug. 31. The Wildcats’ game against Valdosta State scheduled for last week was canceled.

The Wildcats will try to get going in the right direction when they host Miles (0-2) on Saturday in SIAC play. Miles beat Fort Valley State 34-21 last year.

Gulf South Conference openers

West Georgia, Valdosta State and Shorter open Gulf South Conference play Saturday.

West Georgia (2-0) travels to Delta State (2-0), while Valdosta State (0-1) hosts North Alabama (0-1), and Shorter (0-2) travels to Florida Tech (1-1).

Also Saturday, Georgia State travels to Penn State, Kennesaw State travels to Alabama State, Savannah State travels to Montana, and Albany State hosts North Greenville.
