FVSU picked third in division in SIAC

New Fort Valley State head coach Kevin Porter has only one preseason all-conference selection to try and surpass the expectations of SIAC coaches and sports information directors of a third-place finish in the SIAC East.

The conference’s media day was Wednesday, and Albany State and Miles were the choices to win the East and West, respectively.

Albany State got 78 points, 26 more than Morehouse, which topped FVSU by three points. The Maroon Tigers got two first-place votes and the Wildcats one, to 14 for the Rams.

Punter Juan Serna was the lone FVSU player to make the first or second all-conference team, getting the nod on the first team.

Former Wilkinson County standout David Whipple is the first-team quarterback. The senior from Miles was the all-conference choice after last season, as well.

Morehouse’s Voris Bryant, a junior defensive lineman from Mount de Sales, made the second team, as did Tuskegee’s Darius Holmes, a sophomore defensive back from Northside.

The Wildcats finished 5-4 overall in 2015, 3-1 in conference play and second in the East.

FVSU opens the season on Sept. 4 at Miles in Birmingham, Alabama.
