Georgia College men and women win at home

A big 3-pointer by Terrell Harris late helped Georgia College get past UNC Pembroke 77-74 Saturday at the Centennial Center.

Georgia College improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke fell to 6-6 and 0-3.

With 36.5 seconds left and the teams tied at 74, Harris curled around a pick from Isaac Thomas and knocked down a clutch 3 from the right wing. Although both teams had multiple possessions left, the two squads combined to miss six free throws in the final half-minute to keep the score the same to the final horn.

Harris' 28 points led all scorers, hitting 12-for-17 from the field. He added four assists, as well. Senior Ryan Blumenthal had an active game, with 15 points, seven rebounds, a team-best five assists and three steals.

The Bobcats outshot the visitors 55 percent to 43 percent, including five more 3-pointers.

The Braves won the rebounding battle 46-22.

Brandon Winford led four double-digit scorers for UNCP, hitting for 15 points with seven boards.

Harris made his way into the top 10 in scoring at Georgia College, passing both Ronnie Sims (1982-84) and Tim Northcut (1987-91) into ninth place. Harris now has 1,185 career points, 111 behind eighth place and Graham Martin (2006-10).

Senior Rio McMillian's three blocks gives the senior 71 in his career, passing current women's assistant coach Jeremy Mayweather (2005-06) for eighth place in school history.

Georgia College women win 10th straight

The Georgia College women's basketball team beat UNC Pembroke 63-51 Saturday for its 10th straight win and 600th in program history.

It was also the team's 250th in the Centennial Center.

Georgia College improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt, while UNC Pembroke fell to 4-5 and 0-3.

Outscoring UNC Pembroke 20-9 after one quarter of play, Georgia College set the tone for early on both ends of the floor. The Bobcats held the Braves just 26.4 percent (14-53) shooting from the field, while shooting 50 percent (25-50) themselves.

Three Bobcats scored in double-digits: Kadesha Gibbs, LaRice Walker and Mckenna Rushton (Gainesville).

Gibbs had her ninth double-figure game of the season with 16 points. Rushton added 11 points and six rebounds, and Walker 14 points.
