Georgia Southern looks to get back on track
The Georgia Southern Eagles suffered their first Sun Belt Conference loss last week when they dropped a 31-13 decision to Appalachian State.
The Eagles are looking to get back to their winning ways this week as they take on the Texas State Bobcats, also on Thursday night.
"We have to figure out what we did wrong and not do it again. We have to move on to Texas State," Eagles head coach Willie Fritz said. "We have a tough opponent this Thursday evening, and we better focus all our attention there, or we are going to have problems."
Texas State enters the game at 2-4, and it's coming off of a 36-18 win over South Alabama. The Bobcats currently sit fifth in total offense in the conference and has a balanced offense with 1,320 rushing yards and 1.396 passing yards. The Bobcats are also fourth in the conference in scoring offense, scoring 206 points.
"The run the run-pass option, which is tough. It is a really diverse offense; they do a lot of different things that you do not see every week," Fritz said. "There are some similarities in the triple-(option) that we run here at Georgia Southern, but a lot of things that are different. Their quarterback is going to throw the ball anywhere between 15 to 20 times. It is a really quarterback-heavy offense."
The Bobcats' quarterback Tyler Jones has 1,259 yards passing and 418 on the ground. He has 13 combined touchdowns on the season (seven passing and six rushing).
"He can run, and he can throw it. He is good on the run, too. He has a lot of decisions he has to make on the fly based on the fronts and coverages," Fritz said
Last year, Georgia Southern knocked off Texas State 28-25 on its way to an undefeated Sun Belt season and a conference title. The Eagles used a 100-yard interception return to ice the game. Texas State outgained Georgia Southern 439-268 but could not avoid costly turnovers.
"Well it was a really tough win for us last year. We had some breaks go our way. Our kids understand the quality of opponent that we are getting ready to play," Fritz said.
