Georgia Southern looks to stay perfect in Sun Belt Conference

The Georgia Southern Eagles sit at 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play heading in to their matchup Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe.

The Eagles are undefeated in conference play since joining the Sun Belt last season, and they will try to extend their winning streak to 10 games in the conference against the Warhawks.

“We put a premium on conference games. Like everyone else in the Sun Belt, our goal is to win the conference,” Eagles head coach Willie Fritz said. “It’s a big week for us; we’ve got a bye week next week. I just told our guys, ‘Let’s put everything into this we possibly can.’ ”

The bye week will give the Eagles the chance to “take a deep breath,” according to Fritz.

In a tight game last season, the Eagles knocked off the Warhawks 22-16 in the season finale. Quarterback Kevin Ellison led the way with more than 100 yards passing and rushing.

This season, the Eagles rank first in the conference in rushing with 358 yards per game. Louisiana-Monroe currently sits last in that statistic with just 85 yards per game. The Warhawks have a pass-first offense with around 200 yards per game.

The Eagles’ Antonio Glover leads the Sun Belt in interceptions with three, and he could get plenty of chances to add to that number against the Warhawks.

Conference-leading rusher Matt Breida struggled against the Warhawks last year, rushing for 51 yards on 19 attempts.

“Every one of these conference games counts, one and every one of them is important,” Fritz said.
