GMC rallies for win over Navarro

GMC, ranked 14th in the junior college ranks, rallied twice from double-digit deficits Saturday to beat No. 15 Navarro 35-34 in its season opener.

The Bulldogs (1-0) blocked a potential game-winning field goal with 10 seconds to play.

With 1:20 left, Navarro had the ball and a 34-29 lead, but it fumbled on its 17-yard line, and Maurice Williams recovered to give the Bulldogs life. It took one play for GMC to capitalize as Tresvon Coakley scampered into the end zone for a one-point GMC lead.

After the two-point try failed, Navarro started at its 31 with 1:12 left. Using four complete passes, Navarro moved to the GMC 28 and set up for the potential game-winning field goal from 45 yards out.

But Cam Jackson came up with the block to seal the win.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been involved in a longer game or a more exciting game,” GMC head coach Bert Williams said. “We made plenty of mistakes along the way, but we also came up with some big plays when we needed them. Our guys never quit.”
