GMC takes junior college national golf title; UGA hires pitching coach
Floris Veth and Ashton Denton finished in the top four to lead GMC to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III men's golf championship in Chautauqua, New York this week.
GMC won by 24 strokes, shooting a 299 in the final round. The Bulldogs took control early in the tournament and led by 13 strokes after the first day.
Veth finished even for the tournament and Denton was 6 over par, earning the two first-team All-America honors.
Columbus State (Ohio) Community College finished second.
Only in the third round did GMC fail to shoot the best round of the day.
It is the Bulldogs' second golf national championship. GMC also won in 2004.
Georgia names pitching coach
Pitchers at Georgia will work next season under a coach with experience in the Big Ten, ACC and West Coast Conference as well as playing experience in the Mid-American Conference and the pro level.
Georgia named Sean Kenny as its pitching coach on Friday, replacing Fred Corral, who came to the Bulldogs with head coach Scott Stricklin in 2013.
Kenny is a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan and comes to Athens after five seasons as pitching coach at Michigan. The Wolverines finished 42-17 this season and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Michigan led the Big Ten with a 3.46 ERA in 2017 and 562 strikeouts, with opponents batting .231. The Wolverines ranked first in the conference in 2016 in fewest hits and were second in strikeouts with three pitchers being drafted.
Kenny coached with Michigan head coach Erik Bakich at Maryland, and he spent six seasons as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Pepperdine, going to the NCAA Tournament five times.
Kenny served in those roles at San Diego, as well.
