Louisville's free throws sink Georgia Tech
ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech simply ran out of Marcus Georges-Hunt on Saturday.
The senior had 23 points but fouled out with 1:01 and the game tied, only to have Louisville win it 75-71 with six straight from the line.
Georges-Hunt hit a pair of free throws to tie the game for the ninth time with 1:16 left. But he fouled out on the next trip down the court after he was whistled for coming from behind in an attempt to block the shot of Louisville's Anas Mahmoud.
Mahmoud made two free throws, giving him 15 points, and Georgia Tech was not able to knot it up again.
The game was tied at 32 with 2:46 left in the first half, but Louisville failed to score another point until after halftime. Georgia Tech put together a 7-0 closing run with Tadric Jackson ending the run with a steal and layup that he converted into a three-point play that gave his team a 39-32 halftime lead.
THREE WHO MATTERED
Georges-Hunt: Scored 23 points but was limited to 28 minutes because of foul trouble. He picked up his third personal with 17:28 and didn't return until 11:02 left. He fouled out with 1:01 remaining. Georges-Hunt made 12-of-12 from the line and had five rebounds and two assists.
Nick Jacobs: The senior came off the bench to score 16 points, making 6-of-10 from the floor. Jacobs had 10 rebounds. He earned his first double-double of the season.
Smith: The senior was not much of a factor, scoring 12 points and making only 1-of-5 on 3-pointers.
TURNING POINT
The game was tied when Georges-Hunt fouled out. When he left the game, the Yellow Jackets turned it over on their next possession when Jackson had the ball stolen, and Louisville made six straight free throws to establish distance.
OBSERVATIONS
Look who's starting: Travis Jorgenson got his first start of the year at point guard. He was joined by Georges-Hunt, Adam Smith, Charles Mitchell and James White.
A block machine: Center Ben Lammers continues to assert himself as a shot blocker. The sophomore swatted away two more in the first half and now has a team-leading 26. He has had totaled nine blocks in the past three games.
Better from the line: Georgia Tech outscored Louisville 19-15 from the free-throw line. The Yellow Jackets made 19-of-23, with Jacobs and Georges-Hunt going a combined 16-for-16.
THEY SAID IT
Georgia Tech head coach Brian Gregory on the game: "I thought we played with some toughness and discipline. The defense is not where it needs to be on a consistent basis."
Georges-Hunt on his fifth foul: "I actually thought I got it clean. I should have been under him already. Just a late reaction, and it cost me my last foul."
Jacobs on the success of the Louisville post players: "Worked all week on ways to stop the post. One had 12, one had 15, so we really struggled."
WHAT'S NEXT?
Georgia Tech plays its next two games on the road -- at N.C. State on Wednesday and at Syracuse on Saturday.
