Ex-Northside standout Davis on Sun Belt team

Former Northside standout Robert Davis was among five Georgia State players picked to the Sun Belt preseason all-conference team Friday during the conference media day in New Orleans.

Georgia Southern had running back Matt Breida, offensive lineman Andy Kwon and defensive linemen Bernard Dawson and Jay Ellison are on the first team. Defensive lineman Darrius Sapp made the second team.

And Appalachian State quarterback Taylor Lamb, son of Mercer head coach Bobby Lamb, was a first-team pick.

Davis was joined by receiver Penny Hart and safety Bobby Baker on the first team, with tight end Keith Rucker and defensive end Shawanye Lawrence on the second team.

Davis, a senior, was a first-team pick after last season with 61 catches for 980 yards and six touchdowns.

He is on the Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list, and is the leading active receiver in the Sun Belt and in the top 10 nationally. Davis has at least one catch in 37 straight games.

He is joined on this year’s roster by cornerback Deion Wilkins of Upson-Lee, running back Glenn Smith of Northside, place-kicker Barry Brown of Dublin, linebacker Trey Payne of Northside and defensive lineman Jalen Lawrence of Westside.

In Thursday’s poll of the head coaches, Georgia State was picked to finish third and Georgia State fourth, behind Appalachian State and Arkansas State.
