Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh makes stop at Lee County satellite camp

The Jim Harbaugh satellite camp tour made a stop in south Georgia on Thursday night. At Lee County, more than 100 high school athletes attended a camp, dominated by the Michigan coaching staff but also featuring coaches from Georgia, Troy, UCLA and some smaller programs in Georgia.

In addition to his staff, Harbaugh had room for one more passenger.

“I left Ann Arbor three days ago,” he said. “I put my son in the car seat and he said, ‘Dad, I want to go with you to football camp.’ When he said that, it was one of those things that my whole body warmed up, something I’ll remember until they put dirt over me — my son wanted to come with me to football camp.”

It’s uncertain how long Harbaugh’s son will tag along on Harbaugh’s trip around the country, but Harbaugh is just getting started.

Dressed in an orange San Francisco Giants Buster Posey jersey for three or so hours, Harbaugh and his coaching staff ran drills with players on Lee County’s team.

Most of the drills were broken down into positions, and incorporated in each drill was a slight competition. In the speed drills, the players who finished in the top two were taken aside in their own group, and then they competed against each other.

Running these camps is something Harbaugh enjoys. One thing he finds most rewarding about these camps is connecting to the football world.

“Coaches from other schools, high school coaches, the youngsters, you really feel like you’re meeting and connecting with a lot of people,” Harbaugh said.

He finds the teaching aspect of the camp rewarding, as well.

Harbaugh said doing these camps could spark an athlete’s interest in the sport. And having that impact on a young athlete is something that would please him at the conclusion of the camp.

But one big thing he hopes to really get out of these camps is the teaching aspect of it. Because he is getting these players at such a young age, building their confidence is what helps him feel the camp was successful.

“The goal is that the youngsters would take one, two, three or four things away from camp (Thursday) that will help them the rest of the summer and through the season,” he said. “And that they leave here as a better and more confident football player.”

Harbaugh had a big smile at the conclusion of the camp, through the photo shoot at the end and all the way to the conclusion of his interview.

For Harbaugh, it’s back on the road to continue his national satellite camp tour. Whether his son will tag along, who knows, but Harbaugh is enjoying every minute of these camps and will certainly not forget about south Georgia.

“I’m leaving here a big, big fan of Leesburg (and) a big fan of south Georgia,” he said.
