Georgia College loses by one in Peach Belt tournament
Hopes for a Georgia College baseball repeat as Peach Belt Conference tournament champions came to a close Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Columbus State.
The conference tournament has moved to pool play this season, with four teams in each pool. The fourth-seed Bobcats, top-seeded Cougars and No. 8 North Georgia each finished 2-1. The Cougars advance to the title game based on the tiebreak of best regular-season conference finish.
Columbus State scored a run each in the second and third innings to inch in front.
A two-run fifth for Georgia College tied the game, as left fielder Garrett Green plated the first run with a single and center fielder Logan Mattix scored another with a sacrifice fly. The Cougars answered right back with two in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-2 lead.
In the ninth, alternating outs and walks put runners on first and second with two down. Designated hitter Wesley Wommack singled to center to cut the lead in half, but the rally stopped there.
Sophomore righty Charlie Hecht went five innings for Georgia College, but fell to 7-3.
The Bobcats will wait for the NCAA Division I field to be announced Sunday, with four at-large bids in play, although two have been designated for Catawba and Mount Olive.
