Georgia College tops North Georgia in Peach Belt tournament
Georgia College held off a ninth-inning rally to beat North Georgia 4-2 Thursday night in the Peach Belt Conference baseball tournament in Florence, South Carolina.
Rain hit the Francis Marion campus with Montevallo leading USC Aiken 15-9 in the eighth inning. Georgia College and North Georgia started about four hours after the scheduled time.
The Bobcats improved to 33-16. They scored three in the sixth and one in the eight, and held North Georgia to two hits.
Logan Mattix and Brandon Purcell each had two hits for Georgia College.
Georgia College, which jumped two spots to No. 6 in the latest NCAA Southeast Region poll, topped Augusta 9-4 on Wednesday, thanks to three runs in the second and five in the fifth.
Rookie starter Bradley Spinner tossed 5 1/3 innings, improving to 3-0.
All-conference first-teamer Matthew Miller went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Clayten Ayres finished 2-for-3 with a run and the RBI.
Catcher Brandon Purcell and All-Peach Belt second-team outfielder Logan Mattix each went 2-for-4, Mattix driving home two and scoring another, while Purcell drove in one and scored once.
