Stratford names Sweeney as boys basketball head coach
Stratford went less than a month without a boys basketball head coach.
The school named Georgia Southwestern assistant Sean Sweeney on Thursday to replace Jamie Dickey, who resigned in mid-April.
Sweeney, familiar with Stratford from recruiting senior guard O’Showen Williams, among others, was at Georgia Southwestern for three years, including as associate head coach in 2015-16.
Cale Mainor of Howard is a sophomore on the Hurricanes’ roster.
The Hurricanes have gone 20-11, 15-12 and 11-15 the past three seasons, going to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2013-14.
Prior to joining the staff at Georgia Southwestern, Sweeney was an assistant coach at Francis Marion, North Charleston High, and director of basketball operations at Charleston Southern.
The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native was a three-sport letterman in high school and played basketball on the college level for two years at Penn State-Brandywine and the final two years of his college career at Charleston Southern.
Sweeney has a bachelor’s in criminal justice and minor in sociology from Charleston Southern, graduating in 2010, and a Masters in history from Fort Valley State.
