TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Q: Are you required to wear bowling shoes during competition?
A: No. USBC rule 12 does prohibit any shoes that deface approaches. Soft rubber sole shoes and heels that rub off on the approaches are also forbidden. Many bowlers have started wearing tennis shoes (which leave no residue) on their push-away foot. This gives more momentum and prevent sliding. Some bowling centers, leagues or tournaments may have their own rules governing bowling shoes.
