TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Q: I have heard people talk about candlepin and duckpin bowling. Could you explain these?
A: Both of these are variations to the tenpin game that is familiar with most bowlers. These games were popular in the past but have become less known in current times; however both are still active in the United States. Candlepin bowling uses a much smaller ball (22 inch diameter difference) with no finger holes. The game has cylinder-shaped pins and there are three balls per frame. It is still played in New England and eastern Canada. Duckpin bowling is similar to candlepin except the pins resemble those used in tenpin, only much shorter. Many older bowlers started out on this game. Today, it still played in several states.
