This past month, the United States Bowling Congress updated national and state bowling records to include the past winter season. National records of interest include: highest individual league averages -- men (261.7) and women (245.1); highest individual three-game series -- men (900 -- 27 achievers with one individual bowling two), women (879), male youth (900 twice by the same individual) and female youth (869); most individual career 300 games -- men (171), women (44), male youth (31) and female youth (10); most individual career 800 series -- men (166), women (50), male youth (22) and female youth (4); highest three game scratch series by a four person team -- men (3,251) and women (2,985).

Updated records for the state of Georgia were: highest individual series -- male (887, Bret Dal Santo, Savannah) and female (870, Quantrelle Green, Atlanta); highest five person team game (1,318, Short Bus Racing, Snellville, 2001) and highest five person team series (3,627, Strikers Reloaded, Rome, 2,006). Unfortunately, these are the only records kept by state. Four-person team records are not available.

The USBC also issues a list of record setting performances for the past season. Some of the more interesting accomplishments were:

Nine-year-old Anthony Mastroianni of Brooklyn bowled a 299 game.

The Heckman family of Pennsylvania (father, mother, son and two grandchildren) all bowled 300 games during the past season.

Camden Rokita of Camden, Illinois, bowled a 300 game for four consecutive weeks in the same league.

Stephanie and Chris Johnson (wife and husband) of Fort Worth, Texas, bowled an 800 series in same league on the same night.

Marcille McMicken of Amarillo, Texas, rolled her 48th all spare game.

Jeremy Phillips of Pocatello, Idaho, rolled the highest three game series (896) without a 300. His games were 298, 299 and 298.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Q: What is the history of the automatic pinsetter?

A: Fred Schmidt invented the automatic pinsetter and made the first prototype in his garage. The unit was displayed at a tournament in Buffalo, New York in 1946.
