US Hero Malik Tillman Scored Iconic World Cup Goal with Bloody Foot

Two weeks ago, United States men’s national team midfielder Tyler Adams appeared on FS1’s “First Things First” and identified midfielder Malik Tillman as one USMNT player flying under the radar at the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup.

“He creates so many chances for us,” Adams said. “He’s such an important player. He’s a guy that plays at the highest level in Champions League and in the Bundesliga.”

Tillman is on every U.S. soccer fan’s radar now.

Tillman took a free kick and buried it into the top corner to seal the USMNT’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, July 1. His first-ever World Cup goal instantly rivaled Landon Donovan’s famed goal against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup as the best goal in USMNT history. Prisoner of the moment? Who cares!

Tillman made it even more iconic by revealing his bloodied right foot after the match and confirming that he had switched cleats moments before taking his free kick. With total nonchalance, he said, “Someone stepped on me, but yeah, it’s just pain, I guess.”

Tillman will bear an even heavier burden to create chances in the USMNT’s Round-of-16 match against Belgium on Monday, July 6.

Breakout star striker Folarin Balogun, who scored in the 45th minute, was shown a controversial red card for a challenge on Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic in the 64th minute. FIFA’s regulations at this World Cup make it so the U.S. cannot appeal Balogun’s red card, per Tom Bogert, meaning he cannot play against Belgium.

The bad news? Balogun is the USMNT’s leading scorer in the tournament with three goals. The potentially good news? Four other players have found the back of the net, with the likes of Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie also repeatedly flirting with scoring.

This squad can strengthen their hold in U.S. soccer lore by beating Belgium, as it would mark the USMNT’s first trip to the quarterfinals since the 2002 World Cup. The only time the U.S. men have finished above the quarterfinals came in the inaugural 1930 World Cup.
