Two Yankees Prospects Selected for All-Star Futures Game

The New York Yankees are sending two future stars to Philadelphia for All-Star weekend.

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced the rosters for the All-Star Futures Game, allowing baseball fans to witness the emerging talent of top prospects around the league. Representing the Bronx Bombers will be shortstop George Lombard Jr. (No. 1) and right-handed pitcher Carlos Lagrange (No. 4).

Both Lombard and Lagrange are ranked on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects List, with Lombard clocking in at No. 20 and Lagrange at No. 85. Both are currently playing with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Lombard, 21, has seen his stock rise rapidly this season and he is now viewed as the Yankees' shortstop of the future. He got off to a tremendous start with the Double-A Somerset Patriots, slashing .312/.400/.571 with eight doubles and four home runs in 20 games to earn a promotion to Triple-A on April 29.

Despite landing on the 7-day IL with sprained fingers on his left hand, Lombard is continuing to hold his own with the RailRiders. He's ameliorating a .231 batting average with great on-base skills, reaching at a .381 clip by drawing 35 walks against 42 strikeouts. In 42 games, the young infielder has 12 doubles, four homers, a .766 OPS and 109 wRC+. If Lombard's play continues to improve at the Triple-A level, he could very well be in the Bronx by 2027.

As for Lagrange, the 23-year-old captivated the Yankees by striking out 168 batters across High-A and Double-A last season. Armed with a fastball that regularly reaches triple digits, as well as a slider, cutter and changeup for strong secondaries, Lagrange has 83 strikeouts in 63.1 innings at the Triple-A level this year. He's still looking to improve his command, issuing 33 walks with a 1.36 WHIP, both of which have contributed to a bloated 4.55 ERA.

Despite control being a work in progress, Lagrange's stuff is so electric that the Yankees may consider calling him up later this year as a weapon out of the bullpen. Nonetheless, 11 of his 18 appearances this year have been starts, so they may envision him more as a starting pitcher in the future.

Yankees fans can watch Lombard and Lagrange on Sunday, July 12. The All-Star Futures Game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, with first pitch scheduled for noon EST.
