Mike Vrabel Needs Christian Barmore to Finish More for Patriots Defense

Drafted by the Bill Belichick administration and handed a four-year, potential $84 million extension by the abbreviated Jerod Mayo regime, Christian Barmore found himself in need to prove his NFL worth to a third coach in 2025, Mike Vrabel.

The Alabama product overcame the blood-clot issue that cost him most of the 2024 season and some domestic issues off-the-field to garner some serious respect on the field from Vrabel in 2025.

Once thought of as a potential contract casualty – Barmore will be paid about $14 million this season guaranteed – the 315-pounder earn some praise coming out of the recent mandatory minicamp.

"He's a very disruptive player, player, who cares a lot," said Vrabel, intending to make a point with the latter half of that response. "He's a player we have to manage so he's able to get and understand what to do without practicing every single day."

Barmore's numbers were solid but unspectacular in 2025. With his interior linemate Milton Williams attracting the bulk of the attention, Barmore finished with just 15 solo tackles and two sacks over 17 games.

Even Vrabel stated he has to be better.

"I just want to see him finish, so does he," said the coach. "Some of those plays he had in the backfield and around the quarterback … Instead of being disruptive, being able to finish those because he did that a lot. We try to talk to him about not being frustrated because those plays impact the game. They may not show up on a statistical category. His attitude has been great. I enjoy working with him, and we're looking for more of the same next year."

Barmore needs to stay on the field

Barmore, who took his share of heat early on for not reaching his potential – he missed 20 games in his first four seasons – seems to have found a sense of belonging under Vrabel. At age 26, he feels his best football lies ahead.

"I can't wait to come back to training camp on July 24. We've got a group of guys who can't wait," he said. "We trust in the coaching staff and trust in the team, the vets. Just keep working hard together, staying close as a group with the D-line.

"We have a really great coaching staff ... guys that help me out, help the whole d-line out. They're real with us, and that's why I respect them."

Barmore understands, though, this game is about production. And with Williams drawing double-teams on the regular, responsibility shifts to Barmore.

"Whoever has the one on one, you have to win. That's the mentality, and that's the role we stand on," he said.
