Alphonso Davies Breaks New Ground for Canada at 2026 FIFA World Cup
Alphonso Davies is Canada‘s most recognizable star as the 2026 FIFAWorld Cup kicks off.
Born in a refugee camp in Ghana, Davies and his family moved to Canada when he was five years old, growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, before debuting for the Canadian men’s national team on June 13, 2017, at just 16 years old.
Within weeks, he became the youngest goalscorer in both Canadian national team history and CONCACAF Gold Cup history, scoring twice against French Guiana on July 7, 2017, the team’s first match of the tournament.
Since then, he’s become the face of Canadian soccer, helping lead the country back to the World Cup in 2022 and scoring Canada’s first-ever men’s World Cup goal against Croatia on Nov. 27, 2022.
Now, as the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins, with Canada being one of the hosts, Davies has just added another milestone to his resume.
At 25 years and eight months old, Davies officially became the youngest captain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He was named captain of the CANMNT in June 2024 and has held the role ever since.
