Javier Aguirre as Mexico's Head Coach in Previous World Cups

The 2002 World Cup marked Javier Aguirre's first World Cup as Mexico's head coach. The tournament was held in Japan and South Korea.

Mexico was in Group G with Italy, Croatia, and Ecuador. Despite being in a difficult group, Mexico topped the group with seven points following a 1-0 win against Croatia, a 2-1 win over Ecuador, and a historic 1-1 draw with Italy.

Mexico advanced to the knockout stages, and in the Round of 16, they played the USMNT. The USMNT defeated Mexico 2-0, which is regarded as historic in their rivalry as the original 'Dos a Cero' score that haunts Mexican football.

Mexico played in the opening match against South Africa and drew 1-1. They then defeated France 2-0 but lost 1-0 to Uruguay. Mexico finished 2nd in the group with four points and advanced to the Round of 16.

In the Round of 16, Mexico played against Argentina, where they lost 3-1; Javier Hernandez scored the goal for Mexico in the loss to Argentina.
