Cubs Facing Backlash for Alex Bregman Decision

The biggest disappointment for the Chicago Cubs this year has undoubtedly been the performance of third basemanAlex Bregman. The organization signed the 32-year-old veteran to a five-year, $140 million contract this past offseason to become one of the new faces of the franchise and to cement themselves as the team to beat in the National League Central.

Unfortunately, that has not come into fruition. The Cubs enter Thursday sitting at 34-34 and in danger of being swept by the Colorado Rockies.

A lot of the blame falls on Bregman, who has been underwhelming at the plate. Across 67 games, he has posted a .246 batting average, .331 on-base percentage, .674 OPS, five home runs and 20 RBIs.

Those numbers fall well short of the player he has been across his 11-year career as a former Gold Glove winner, Silver Slugger and All-Star.

As the season has progressed, Bregman has continued to slot lower in the Cubs batting order. He began the year hitting second, but in May was dropped to fourth, where he has primarily hit since, giving more at-bats to other hitters.

However, ahead of Thursday's series finale at Coors Field, manager Craig Counsell decided to move Bregman back up to the second spot in the order, the first time he has hit there in nearly a month.

His decision comes despite Bregman really struggling in June, with just four hits in 35 plate appearances this month.

After learning about the decision, Cubs fans voiced their frustrations in the replies.

"Yeah Bregman batting 2nd will fix everything!" one fan wrote.

Another added, "Yeah let's move Alex Bregman up ."

"I think we need to move Carson Kelly up in the order and move Bregman down. It's so hard to even write that but he is ineffective right now. That's being extremely nice," said one more.

"Yeah I told y'all to move Bregman out of cleanup and you move him to 2nd instead," one fan added.

Another wrote, "Yeah move Bregman up in the order Great job Craig!"

It is unclear why Counsell made the move, but the reality is that if Bregman does not turn it around, it does not really matter where he sits in the order. For a season that began with so much promise in Chicago, it has come crashing down quickly.
