Indoor football league targets Macon for team
Indoor football action appears to be headed back to the Macon Coliseum.
Andre White said Saturday that Macon will have a franchise this season that will play in American Indoor Football. White is listed as the general manager for the Macon Steel on the AIF website.
The Macon Knights played at the Coliseum in arenafootball2 from 2001-06.
“We finalized a deal last week; we’ve been working on it for about four months,” said White, who said there will be a formal announcement for the team Tuesday. “I’ve been wanting to get into the Macon market for about five or six years, but we just couldn’t get a deal worked out. We were able to work out a good deal for the league and for Macon.”
The league was formerly known as the American Indoor Football Association from 2006-2010, according to its website. It has reformed after a one-year merger with the Southern Indoor Football League. There are 12 teams listed on the league’s website.
White said the team has a two-year lease with a one-year option on the Coliseum. A call to Chris Floore, the director of external affairs for Macon, was not returned Saturday.
White said the Macon team will play eight games, including five at home, starting March 24. The season will run through June.
“We want to get in that Macon market and let everyone know that we’re in the community and we’re a part of the community and that we’re going to put a good product on the field,” White said.
