Four Middle Georgia basketball teams will battle for state championships this week
And then there were four.
Four Middle Georgia basketball teams have fought their way all the way to a championship game. They’re hoping to join Stratford Academy, which defeated St. Anne-Pacelli Saturday, as local teams who brought home a state title.
Here’s where and when they’re playing:
Charlton vs. Wilkinson (boys)
- Records: Charlton (29-2) vs. Wilkinson (24-6)
- When: 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8
- Where: Macon Coliseum
Wilkinson dominated Macon County 85-63 Saturday to advance to the finals against Charlton County High, located in Folkston in the southeastern tip of Georgia. The Warriors were undefeated in region play, but Charlton has only lost twice all year, and not since Feb. 3.
Griffin County vs. Baldwin County (girls)
Fourth time’s a charm? Region foes Baldwin and Griffin County have battled thrice already this season: Griffin won the first time by one point, 53-52; Baldwin responded with a 62-45 shellacking at home; and the Bears avenged that loss with a tight 51-48 win in the region tournament.
Wednesday night’s matchup will be between two tough teams that know each other well. Baldwin students are getting an early release Wednesday, with most schools releasing students before noon.
“This is a momentous occasion for our District, as it has been 34 years since our girls basketball team took home a state championship title,” district leaders said in a release.
Warner Robins vs. Kell (girls)
It’s been smooth sailing for the Demons in the GHSA 5A state tournament. They dispatched Calhoun 62-53 last Friday out in Carrollton and are back in their Middle Georgia stomping grounds. Kell has been even more dominant, more than doubling up their first round opponent and beating Jackson last week by 16 points.
Houston Sharks vs. DeKalb Silver Streaks
- When: 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 11
- Where: Macon Coliseum
The Houston County Sharks are a mainstay in the AAASP/GHSA Wheelchair Basketball State Championship, to put it mildly: They’re going for their eleventh consecutive state title. Learn more and buy tickets at ghsa.net or stream the game live at GPB.org.
