Scoreboard: Northside squeaks by Glynn County, HoCo stuns undefeated Brunswick in OT, Peach Co shuts out Crisp Co
It was as if the fans in The Mac were on a roller coaster Friday night, but the Northside Eagles pulled out a first-round playoff win over Glynn County 18-13 thanks to a last-minute interception.
The Eagles nearly watched a 12-point fourth quarter lead slip away, but defensive back Nicholas Linder came up with the game-winning interception to seal the deal with just about a minute left.
“Linder stepped up and made a play, he’s been making them all year long for us, it was good to see,” said Northside head coach Chad Alligood. “In playoff games, you don’t care how you win, you just wanna win, that’s it… great job.”
The Eagles played stellar defense all game, containing the run-heavy offense of the Red Terrors. Aside from a 92-yard touchdown pass early and one 45-yard QB sneak, the defense stuffed Glynn County all night.
“Defense played great, we gave up two plays, that’s it. I can’t say enough about our defense,” Alligood said.
It was the offense that precipitated the near-comeback from Glynn County. Several penalties stalled their late drives. After what looked like a game-winning interception from Ricardo Jones late in the final quarter, the offense coughed the ball up to give the Terrors another shot at the lead.
“Offensively, too many penalties to stop our momentum, but we did some good things,” Alligood said. “Now you just put this one behind you and get ready for the next one.”
Back and forth
Both sides played solid defense in the first half and allowed only one score, each on an explosive play.
Northside took the lead on their third play from scrimmage thanks to a 32-yard touchdown pass and two-point conversion. Glynn County made that score look like small potatoes when they completed a 92-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
The Red Terrors also missed a field goal just before the half, one of two misses on the game that came back to haunt them, considering the six-point margin.
While their offense played poorly late, Northside’s rushing attack established a lead in the third quarter. The Eagles tallied 206 rushing yards and a touchdown between their speedy quarterbacks and running backs.
The run-first offense ran time off the clock and gave Northside an 18-6 lead just as the fourth quarter began after a field goal. It seemed, since their defense had been airtight all night, that the game was decided.
Then Glynn County scored on a surprise 45-yard quarterback rush by Tyler Devlin. But even with three more possessions in the quarter, Devlin couldn’t replicate the magic. The game-ending interception sealed the contest with just over a minute to play.
