Macon Bacon have home opener Friday against Florence. Here’s how they’re making history
The Macon Bacon launch their 2022 season Friday evening with a home opener against Coastal Plain League rivals Florence Flamingos at Luther Williams Field in Carolyn Crayton Park.
The Bacon, a wood-bat collegiate summer baseball team that has played in the CPL since 2018, have a variety of themed home games planned throughout the season, which runs through July 29.
Friday’s game begins with first pitch at 7 p.m. and will feature fireworks. Other key themed nights include Superhero Night (June 11), Macon Pride Night (June 22) and Star Wars Night (July 16).
The Macon Bacon also announced the first woman coach in Coastal Plain League history: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sophomore softball player Kianna Jones.
Jones, who is a member of the Canadian Women’s Junior National Team, will oversee the team’s baseball analytics and base coaching.
“Kianna reached out to us first about internships but in talking with her, it was clear that she belonged on the field, both coaching and in the analytics area,” team president Brandon Raphael said. “When we connected her to Kevin Soine, our manager, he felt she was a perfect fit. We’re thrilled to have her blaze the trail for history in the Coastal Plain League.”
