The voter registration deadline is near. Here’s what to know about voter rules in Georgia
If you’re not registered to vote in the presidential election, it’s not too late yet, but it’s getting very close. Now is the time to take action and do your civic duty.
The deadline to register to vote is Monday, Oct 7, and this goes for online, mail-in and in-person registration.
To qualify to vote, you must meet the following requirements for the state of Georgia:
Be a citizen of the United States
Be a legal resident of Georgia and of the county in which you wish to vote
Be at least 17 1/2 years of age to register and 18 to vote
Not be serving a sentence for a felony involving moral turpitude
Not have been declared mentally incompetent to vote by a judge
Online registration
This is the quickest and most efficient way to register to vote for the upcoming election, given you can access the internet. It’s only a few steps and should not take too long to complete.
You must:
Answer eligibility questions concerning age, felony convictions and mental competence.
Fill in some general information including name, address, gender, date of birth and ethnicity. You must also provide your Georgia driver’s license or state ID card number.
Check the registration status at mvp.sos.ga.gov.
Registration by mail
If you want to register to vote by mail, you have to consider the amount of time the postal system takes to process the registration and factor that into the deadline of Oct. 7.
The steps are fairly simple, but there isn’t much room for error once you pop it in the mail.
Download and complete the voter application form from the Georgia Secretary of State’s website.
Make sure all the information is correct and validated. Errors could delay the process and potential voters could miss the deadline.
Mail the completed application to the Georgia Secretary of State’s physical address: 2 MLK Jr. Dr., suite 802 Floyd West Tower Atlanta, Georgia, 30334
The application must be postmarked by the deadline of Oct. 7, 2024.
In-person registration
All the same, requirements must be presented to register in person, but you have a few options. You can download the application from the internet ahead of time to present it in your county’s local registrar’s office.
For Muscogee County:
Board of Elections and Voter Registration
3111 Citizens Way
Columbus, GA 31906
Absentee ballots
To obtain the application to receive an absentee ballot, there are several options available:
Online: download and complete the application for a ballot on the state of Georgia’s website. You’ll need to provide all the voter details and identification information.
By mail: download and print the absentee ballot application, fill it out and mail it to your county board of registrar’s office. Make sure to include a copy of your ID if required.
By email or fax: send the completed application as an attachment to the Board of Elections at richmondelections@augustaga.gov.
Once the application is processed, your ballot will be mailed to the address provided. Complete and return the ballot, but make sure you carefully read the instructions and then sign where indicated.
Your vote must be received by the County Board of Registrars by the time the polls close on Election Day, which in Georgia is 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
You can verify that your ballot was received and counted using the ballot tracking tools available on the Georgia Secretary of State’s website.
