YOUR SAY: Can Wilson be trusted as an impartial arbiter and judge?

I quote from a recent "Special to the Telegraph" letter published in The Telegraph: "Every vote for a Democrat literally furthers the radical social agenda vigorously approved of and promoted by the leaders of this political party ... " Who said this? Obviously a radical Republican, one who feels the Democratic Party should not exist or be entrusted with public office. One who feels the Democrats are so radical and vile that no one, not anyone, should cast a vote for or follow the lead of a professed Democrat in anything, and, yes, that likely believes the Democratic Party is filled with those who are not true Americans like the Republicans.

Every citizen has a right to express an opinion, but would you want to put a citizen with the opinion just expressed on a board whose sworn duty is to act as an arbiter and judge of important matters involving Democrats? Should someone of that temperament and opinion whose arrogance is such that their opinion of Democrats is shouted to the rooftops, or at least contributed to a Telegraph letters to the editor column, be allowed to sit at the head of a public, taxpayer-supported official board and who is receiving a taxpayer provided salary?

Although composed of both major political parties, Democratic and Republican, the Macon-Bibb County Elections Board is charged with handling the primary, general and special elections for our voting citizens. The people selected to sit on the board should be discreet and fair-minded in the fulfillment of their duties, giving favor to none in their decisions in the election process.

Again, I ask who said "Every vote for a Democrat literally furthers the radical social agenda vigorously approved of and promoted by the leaders of this political party ... " It was said by none other than the person who serves as the chairwoman of the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections, Rinda Wilson. While we don't personally care what her opinion of the Democratic Party might be, for her to write such an inflammatory public letter stating her over-the-top opinion of one of the political parties involved in the election process that she is entrusted to oversee to the public mass media is a flagrant violation of that trust.

If you were a Democrat, would you feel comfortable with her in charge of counting your votes realizing how strongly prejudiced she is against you as a Democrat to your winning an election?

In light of her actions the Bibb County Democratic Party formally requests that the mayor and commissioners of Macon-Bibb County remove Rinda Wilson from the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections immediately for her publicly viewed disparity of all Democrats. Wilson's behavior as expressed in her letter is deplorable, egregious and inappropriate. This precedent cannot continue and opens our Macon-Bibb County to possible lawsuits.

The Executive Board of the Bibb County Democratic Party has voted unanimously to seek her dismissal. We gravely question her fairness and ability to count votes cast by those who vote for a Democrat. Further, does Macon-Bibb County even need a Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections? If the present staff is trained and competent and under a capable elections supervisor, we think not, especially in light of Wilson's publicly expressed overt bias against one of the major political parties that participates in the elections she is charged to oversee.

After all, our combined local government is now nonpartisan, and we are seeking ways to trim operating costs. Our mayor and commission should consider cost saving ideas such as the dismantling and/or elimination of the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections completely.

Dr. John Swint is chairman of the Bibb County Democratic Party.
