With your help, the Golden Eagle Awards program will keep flying high in Middle Georgia
The Golden Eagle Awards, a middle Georgia tradition since 1977, need your help.
Over the last 42 years, the Golden Eagles have honored our region’s top high school seniors in 13 categories. Each winner receives recognition at the annual award show, a Golden Eagle trophy and a $1,000 scholarship to use at the school of their choice. Another 13 ‘honorable mentions’ are also selected, who receive a certificate and a $300 prize.
I’ve written in these pages before about the challenges facing local journalism across our nation. We are certainly not exempt from those challenges here in Macon, and as we face those headwinds it is essential that we focus our resources, time and energy on the efforts that most directly impact our journalistic mission.
That hyper focus means that The Telegraph is no longer the best engine to power, plan, facilitate and execute a program like the Golden Eagles.
And that means we need your help. This is not an attempt to secure sponsors for the program. Instead, we are seeking a community partner to take the reins of the program for 2020 and beyond.
Over the last four decades, we’ve developed a strong playbook to make the program into the coveted recognition it has become. With the ideal partner, we’re confident that the program can be taken to an even higher level for our exceptional high school scholars and the educators who believe in them.
And we need a partner who believes in the value of this program — a partner who believes that academic excellence deserves recognition, a partner with the creativity and resources to carry on this storied tradition.
I am consistently impressed by the passion for community I witness across middle Georgia. I’m confident that the right partner is out there — my plea today is for that partner to raise their hand and to help us keep the Golden Eagles flying.
