EDITORIAL: The wait for Log Cabin Drive improvements may soon end

If there is any question why some citizens feel abandoned by government, all they need to do is look at Log Cabin Drive. Residents along that connector have been made promises for decades only to see them go unfulfilled. Maybe 2016 will be the year when two projects -- a recreation center and road improvements -- will move to the completed category. Roadwork along Log Cabin Drive is about to begin which will finally add sidewalks. At one section of the road there is a bridge crossing Rocky Creek where walkers are forced from the ruddy dirt and grass right-of-way out into the roadway.

The other promise, Filmore Thomas Recreation Area -- formerly Durr's Lake, is named for its chief advocate who passed away waiting for the city to act. The reason these two projects are finally being done is through the hard work and perseverance of two people: former Macon City Councilman Frank Tompkins, who proposed fixing the bridge in 2011, and current Commissioner Al Tillman. As Tillman commented in Wednesday's newspaper, it is about "leadership."

In the very near future, these projects can disappear from the radar screen for all the right reasons. Tillman and the other Macon-Bibb County officials can move on to the other projects that need to be done in the area and the rest of the county. Hopefully, it won't take three decades to complete them.
