12 dog breeds that thrive in hot weather
Some dog breeds are built for hotter weather. Many dogs who feel comfortable in the heat were bred to work in regions of the world with warm climates. Raised for hunting, herding and racing, these dogs are able to keep their cool when temperatures rise. If you live in a warm or tropical region, adopting one of these breeds may be a good match.
Most warm weather breeds share unique physical traits that keep them cool in high temperatures. These dogs usually have short or hairless coats, allowing air to circulate throughout their body. Less fur means less retained heat. Their coats are often white, tan or gray, helping them to reflect sunlight. Ears that stay perked up also prevent heat from being trapped, and allow for better circulation. Many hot weather dogs have longer snouts. Flat-faced dogs have more difficulties breathing and therefore have a harder time regulating their body temperature.

Even well-adapted breeds still need breaks from the heat to avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion or stroke. Leaving your dog in a hot car or outside in the elements for extended periods of time can cause serious health issues and even death. It's important to provide your pet with ample access to shade and lots of fresh water during hot weather.
