Trump meets in Situation Room for 'final determination' on Iran deal
WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said he plans to meet with his national security team in the White House Situation Room on Friday, May 28 to make a final decision whether to approve a peace deal with Iran.
"I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination," Trump said in a 10: 51 a.m. ET post on Truth Social after outlining several of his demands in negotiations.
Trump said Iran must agree they will "never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb" and the Strait of Hormuz must be "immediately open" with no tolls on shipping. He said all mines in the strait "will be terminated." Iran will also have to complete the removal of highly enriched uranium, the president said.
It was not clear whether Iran has agreed to any of these stipulations or whether the president was stating his own positions. Trump, in his Truth Social post, said Iran's enriched uranium "will be unearthed by the United States" and destroyed in coordination with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency. "No money will be exchanged, until further notice," the president said.
Trump's comments came after negotiators for the U.S. and Iran reached a tentative agreement the day before on a memorandum of understanding to reopen the strait and continue discussions on Tehran's nuclear program during an the extended 60-day ceasefire. But the proposal still lacks Trump's endorsement.
Trump suggested in his social media post that U.S. ships overseeing the naval blockade in the strait can return to the United States, though it was unclear whether he meant pending the finalization of the deal.
"Ships caught in the Strait due to our amazing and unprecedented Naval Blockade, which will now be lifted, may start the process of '"'heading home!'" Trump said in his post. "Say HELLO to your wives, husbands, parents, and families from me, your favorite President!"
Trump added that other items "of far less importance" have been agreed to.
The memorandum of understanding, first reported by Axios, would require unfettered shipping through the Strait of Hormuz without tolls and obligate Iran to remove mines from the waterway within 30 days. In return, the United States would end a blockade of Iranian ports and waive some sanctions on oil sales. The much thornier issues involving Iran's nuclear capacity would be addressed during the 60-day ceasefire.
Vice President JD Vance told reporters on Thursday, May 27 the Trump administration is "very close" to agreeing to a deal with Iran but "not there yet."
Vance cited questions Iran's nuclear program and highly enriched uranium as the main sticking points. Vance said the administration is "trying to set the stage for a successful negotiation" on the nuclear question, adding that some details will take some time to iron out.
"Even if you come to an agreement on, let's say, destroying the enriched stockpile, how do you do it? When do you do it? How do you actually get access to it?" the president said.
Trump has said repeatedly that Iran must dispose of its enriched uranium and ends its nuclear program as part of any deal. But Iranian leaders have previously called its right to uranium enrichment non-negotiable.
