A tornado warning was issued as heavy wind and rain plummeted through Middle Georgia Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Areas of Macon-Bibb, Houston, Peach, Jones and Twiggs counties were warned to take cover due to potential storm damage until at least 7:15 a.m., NWS said.

“Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter,” the agency said. “Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.”

Severe weather sirens were heard around 7 a.m. throughout Macon, where wind gusts were expected to reach over 25 mph, a forecast by the NWS said.

A tornado warning “means a tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar and there is a serious threat to life and property to those in the path of the tornado,” the agency said.

There was no longer a possibility of tornados by around 7:45 a.m., the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency said.

“Please continue to be vigilant in case of potential worsening weather conditions,” the EMA said.

The storm moved northeast toward Baldwin, Hancock and Washington counties, according to a live weather map by the NWS.

A cold front triggered the severe weather, which “(separated) two air masses, of which the cooler, denser mass is advancing and replacing the warmer,” the NWS said.
