Thousands of Maconites are without power Saturday afternoon as high winds topple trees and damage power lines.

Georgia Power is reporting 62 outages affecting 2,585 customers in Macon and four outages impacting 525 customers in Warner Robins. The utility company isn’t currently projecting when power will be restored to those customers. For more information on outages, visit Georgia Power’s Outage and Storm Center website.

The National Weather Service’s Peachtree City office has a wind advisory in effect for North and Middle Georgia through 7 p.m.

“Windy conditions will develop early this morning behind a strong cold front, and persist through this evening before diminishing,” the advisory reads. “Sustained northwest winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph at times will occur. Locally higher gusts are possible. These winds, combined with the saturated grounds from the rain will increase the risk of knocking down trees.”

Georgia Power recommends the following safety tips:

  • Watch for downed wires. Downed power lines may be hidden by debris or fallen trees.
  • Never touch any downed wire or attempt to remove tree branches from power lines – it can kill.
  • Avoid chain link fences. They may be electrified by a downed line out of sight and conduct electricity over great distances.
  • Move over. Be mindful of line crews and personnel in the field working to make repairs and restore service to customers. Georgia Power is covered by the move over law that requires drivers to provide a buffer to allow crews to work safely.
  • Call 911 or Georgia Power if you come across downed power lines or a dangerous condition.
