  • NWS has another heat advisory in place for Wednesday for Middle Georgia.
  • Middle Georgia’s expect high of 96 degrees Wednesday means heat index above 105 degrees.
  • NWS and Red Cross warn hot, humid conditions may cause heat illnesses and give guidance.

The National Weather Service is expected to issue another heat advisory for Wednesday for Middle Georgia and other portions of the state, marking the third day in a row when feel-like temperatures have reached 105 degrees or more.

“We already have another heat advisory in place for tomorrow,” Christian Rangel, a meteorologist for the NWS in Peachtree City, said Tuesday. “This is going to be in effect for most of Central and North Georgia.”

The high temperature for Middle Georgia on Wednesday is expected to be 96 degrees, but the humidity will make it feel a lot hotter, he said. The heat index is expected to be in excess of 105 degrees.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, the NWS warns. Take these precautions:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon
  • Use air conditioning if you have access to it. Fans may not be adequate
  • Wear light-weight, light-colored clothing.

What’s ahead for the rest of the week?

“We are still going to track the hot temperature and heat index trends for the rest of the week,” Rangel said. “There will be a little bit of a slight temperature reduction, so we’re looking at the Wednesday through Friday time frame.”

For that time frame, temperatures will probably only reach the lower to mid-90s and the heat index values will still be hot.

“But they look to stay around 100 to 103 degrees, so slightly cooler but not by much — just enough to where there may or may not be an advisory,” Rangel said.

The heat index values must reach more than 105 degrees to trigger a heat advisory.

“Because the relative humidity is so high because of the dew point temperature also being high, that is what is creating these heat index values, and so ... even if the temperature is still hanging out in the mid 90s, maybe close to 95 to 96 degrees, you are still going to feel a temperature that’s closer to like 100 to 103, thanks to how humid it is,” Rangel said.

‘Potential uptick’ for the holiday weekend

The NWS also is monitoring trends for the Independence Day weekend “for another potential uptick in temperatures” on Saturday and Sunday, Rangel said.

“We will continue to monitor the chances that we could get back up to 105 degrees for your area and parts around it because right now, it does look to be a bit of an uptick. But we will see,” he said.
