Macon-Bibb County was placed under a tornado watch by the National Weather Service on Thursday, according to county officials.

The watch will be in place until 11 p.m. Thursday. If the county is under a tornado warning, emergency sirens will go off.

Officials urge residents to locate a bathroom or closet to shelter in case a tornado develops. An ideal shelter will be “one with as few windows and doors as possible and in the central portion of your house,” according to county officials.

“A room, preferably with a water supply, is desirable; something like a master bathroom or large closet works well.”

If people are in an office building, they are urged to select interior rooms above the ground floor with the fewest windows or vents, according to county officials. The rooms should have space for everyone to sit, officials said.

“Large storage closets, utility rooms, pantries, copy and conference rooms without exterior windows will work well,” county officials said. “Provide for client, customer and visitor safety by asking them to stay — not leave.”

This is a breaking story and will be updated as additional information becomes known.
