Flipped U-Haul, downed trees in Macon during morning storms
A truck overturned and fallen trees blocked traffic during a severe thunderstorm with threatening winds Monday morning in Macon.
A U-Haul truck flipped on its side while parked at Store Here Self Storage at 2432 Riverside Drive, according to Jerome Sullivan, who said he was visiting his storage unit there.
“I was about to head home, and when I seen all that dark cloud, it touched down, seen the wind,” Sullivan said. “That’s the severity of it, and it can happen in the blink of an eye.”
He was safe and sheltered in a house, but previously hopped between long-term motel stays.
“I know this is not a subject to a lot, but it is a subject to me,” Sullivan said. “You know, there is a lot of people without homes that were in this general area. Thank God some of them caught cover.”
Some roads were reportedly impacted by uprooted trees and tree limbs, according to the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency.
“Our crews are being dispatched to assess conditions and clear roadways as needed,” the EMA said on Facebook.
Traffic was blocked or delayed on:
- Pierce Avenue
- Riverside Drive near Pierce Avenue
- Rivoli Drive between Rivoli Ridge and Kentucky Downs drives
- Thomaston Road near Heritage Elementary School
People can report non-emergency situations and damage such as fallen trees and power lines to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500.
