100 degree heat index prompts warnings in Macon. When will the heat end?

Macon is under a heat advisory that started at 1 p.m. Tuesday and will end Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.

The heat index is expected to get up to as high as 109 degrees over the next two days. It is the first significant heat wave of the year in Georgia, according to the National Weather Service.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration experts provide a few tips to avoid heat related illnesses during the heat wave:

  • Proper hydration is important. Drink a lot of electrolytes to protect yourself from heat stress.

  • Every two hours, apply sunscreen. Ideally, SPF 30 or higher will protect you from sunburns.

  • Wear loose-fitting, light-weight clothing. Avoid dark colored clothing.

  • Make sure to take regular breaks.

  • If you become overheated, make sure to move to an air-conditioned environment.

  • Stay informed by local and national weather services.

  • Reduce strenuous outside activities until the coolest parts of the day.

“To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments,” the NWS said in an advisory Tuesday.

The National Weather Service cautions people that a heat stroke is an emergency, and to call 911 in the case of a heat stroke.

Extreme heat warnings and heat advisories extended Tuesday from the Midwest region of the country all the way to the East Coast and affected nearly 160 million people, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition to a heat advisory, Macon is also under a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the week. It applies to parts of north and central Georgia.

When will temperatures drop in Macon?

There is a chance for lowering temperatures Wednesday, as much of Georgia has a marginal risk of seeing thunderstorms, according to the NWS.

The chance for storms increases Thursday and carries on throughout the weekend, providing a better chance for lower temperatures.
