Rising Ocmulgee River levels prompt temporary Amerson Park closures amid flood warning
Several parts of the Amerson River Park have been temporarily closed due to rising levels of the Ocmulgee River, the Macon-Bibb Parks and Beautification Department announced Tuesday.
Amid a flood warning that’s expected to last until Thursday, the department also closed the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail for public safety. The areas are expected to remain close until river levels recede and any necessary cleanup is completed.
Here are the areas that have been affected:
- Boat ramps on the north and south end of Amerson River Park
- Dirt trails around the pond in Amerson River Park
- Paved trail between the Overlook and north boat ramp in Amerson River Park
- Spring Street boat ramp and the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail
Officials say more areas may close as the river keeps rising.
The department requests people who are using the rest of the park for the next few days to avoid any areas that have been marked off, according to a press release.
Minor flooding has been forecasted for Macon-Bibb, which has been under a flood warning since Tuesday around 5:40 a.m. The warning is expected to end on Thursday afternoon, according to Accuweather.
