Brief tornado, severe thunderstorm warnings issued in Macon, Middle Georgia. What we know
A tornado warning was issued in Macon-Bibb County around 2:20 p.m., according to the county’s Emergency Management Agency.
Bibb, Houston and Twiggs counties were also under a “severe thunderstorm warning” until 2:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Bibb County officials warned people to take shelter and have fresh batteries, and avoid electrical plugs and showers, according to a news release.
“Remain aware and monitor local news and weather sources,” the news release said.
Bibb County was no longer under a tornado warning by 2:30 p.m.
No tornadoes touched down in Bibb County, according to Chris Floore, the chief communications officer for Bibb County. The Houston County Emergency Management Agency was out accessing possible storm damage around 3:30 p.m.
But a second wave of heavy thunderstorms was expected Monday afternoon, the NWS said.
“An ongoing line of storms ... will be capable of damaging wind gusts, hail, and isolated tornadoes,” the NWS said. “Thunderstorms may redevelop ... late in the afternoon to early evening, posing a second threat for severe weather.”
A Hazardous Weather Outlook was reported through Friday in middle and North Georgia, according to the NWS.
“Temperatures Wednesday onward will be well above normal with highs (reaching) near record levels,” the NWS said.
Power outages in Middle GA
Thousands of electrical outages were reported in Houston, Peach and Monroe counties by 2:45 p.m., according to a live map by PowerOutage.us, which tracks outages across the country.
Houston County had the most outages, with over 2,344 Flint Energies and Georgia Power customers impacted around 2:30 p.m. There were 2,100 outages reported in Monroe, 2,060 in Peach, 619 in Bibb, 301 in Crawford and 136 in Jones.
