Homeless, warming shelters prepare to expand service during freezing temps in Macon
Homeless and warming shelters will open for longer hours with expanded capacity during freezing weather this week in Macon.
Macon-Bibb County, United to End Homelessness by United Way of Central Georgia, and other community partners will collaborate on efforts to help people who are homeless or can’t get to shelter at three local locations starting Thursday until temperatures warm up.
They initiated a Cold Weather Activation Protocol to prepare for “a prolonged stretch of dangerously cold temperatures...,” according to Rev. Jake Hall, executive director of United to End Homelessness. “This is what community looks like — working together to provide a lifeline when it’s needed most.”
Low temperatures will drop to the upper 20s Wednesday evening in Macon, according to the National Weather Service.
Wind gusts will pick up between 10-30 mph Thursday, with high temperatures in the lower 40s during the day and lows in the lower 20s at night. Similar temperatures are forecast through the weekend.
Macon will see mostly chilly temperatures with clear skies until at least Tuesday, the NWS said.
