How much snow fell in Macon, Middle Georgia? Freezing temps will make it stick around
Snow-blanketed roads left continued closures and lingering hazards in Middle Georgia, according to the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency and National Weather Service.
Bibb County shut down government offices, schools, libraries, bus routes and parks Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday due to slippery roads.
The storm tapered off Tuesday night after over eight hours of snowfall, but roads and vehicles were seen still covered in at least an inch of snow Wednesday morning.
An estimated 2-3 inches of snow accumulated in most of Middle Georgia around Macon, Warner Robins and Milledgeville Tuesday, a NWS interactive snowfall map shows. Cordele saw some of the most in the state with around 3-4 inches of snow.
Skid marks lined Macon streets with some vehicles still covered almost entirely in white around 6 a.m. before the sun rose Wednesday.
The Bibb County Public Works Department was primarily monitoring safety conditions of “major roads and intersections, and areas near fire stations, sheriff precincts, and hospitals,” a news release from the county said.
A cold weather advisory was in effect until 9 a.m. in all of north and central Georgia due to “very cold temperatures and wind chills (that) can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure,” an NWS report said.
A winter storm warning was in effect due to the hazardous road conditions until 7 a.m. Wednesday from central to southern Georgia, the NWS said.
While there were clear skies and no sign of snow in the days ahead, icy roads, especially overpasses and bridges, can be treacherous to drive on, the NWS said.
Temperatures Wednesday were forecast to hang in the 20s until about noon and hit a high of 36, then drop back into the 20s during the evening.
The rest of the week will bring temperatures with highs in the 40s during the afternoons, and as low as 19 in the evenings.
