Will it snow again in GA this month? What to know about the rest of January’s forecast

We’ve already seen one batch of winter weather this month and much of Georgia has already been blanketed by snow or ice once in the new year.

But is there more snow coming for Georgia this month?

Well, it is a possibility, but forecasts are ever-changing and tend to vary by weather outlet. Here’s what we know:

What AccuWeather says

AccuWeather meteorologists are predicting widespread cold conditions Monday, Jan. 20, through Friday, Jan. 24, with a deep freeze sweeping through the South.

“An extended stretch of wintry weather—including multiple possibilities for snow—is brewing,” said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

The winter storm threat will create high heat demands and the potential for snow and ice conditions, but the overall strength of the storm and chance of accumulation remains unclear.

“The track and intensity of that storm will determine if heavy snow or significant ice occurs in parts of the Southern states in the early and middle part of next week,” said Sosnowski.

Towards the end of January, AccuWeather is predicting highs around the mid 50s and a few days of rain to round out the month.

National Weather Service is predicting

National Weather Service experts are also weighing in on the winter storm threat and chances of snow in Georgia.

“Is there a chance? Yes, there is a possibility of some winter precipitation, but it is mostly looking like a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain,” said Dylan Lusk, senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Lusk said that while there’s a lot of uncertainty with more snow, there is an expectation of “unusually chilly” weather across the state, with some temperatures dipping to around 20 degrees lower than normal from Jan. 20-24.

In the NWS 8-14 day outlook (Wednesday, Jan. 22, to Tuesday, Jan. 28), likely below normal temperatures and slightly above average chances for precipitation are expected in Georgia.

The Weather Channel is expecting

Weather Channel meteorologists are expecting the coldest air to blast through the South Jan. 20-22 and according to some experts, the “wind chills will be dangerous” in several spots.

“The temperatures during this cold snap will be anywhere from 15 to 30 degrees below average for a large area. Some people may experience record cold afternoons,” according to The Weather Channel.

The Weather Channel daily forecasts also show some snow showers for certain areas of Georgia on Tuesday, Jan. 22, including:

After the winter storm threat, The Weather Channel is predicting milder weather for the rest of January and somewhat of a warming trend, with highs reaching the mid to high 50s.
