Winter weather is predicted to hit Macon later this week. Here’s how to stay safe.
As bitter cold sets in across Georgia later this week, state and local agencies are advising residents to be prepared.
Macon is no different, with the National Weather Service predicting a wintry mix Friday and icy road conditions. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 32 degrees, according to the Weather Channel.
Chris Floore, chief communications officer for Macon-Bibb County, said that while the county is still monitoring the situation, the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency and Georgia Emergency Management are already putting out information on how Maconites can stay safe during the bitter cold.
Here’s what residents can do to stay safe.
Watch out for freezing pipes
As temperatures drop to extreme levels this week, pipes are at risk of bursting.
To prevent damage to your home, it’s important to drip faucets and leave your cabinet doors open. This helps expose pipes to warmer air, making them less likely to freeze and burst during the cold.
Bring pets inside
The cold can be dangerous to animals too. If you have pets or other animals who typically spend lots of time outdoors, it’s important to bring them inside ahead of winter weather.
If an animal must stay outside, make sure they have a dry shelter that is free of drafts with lots of bedding to keep them warm.
Stock up on essential items
Extreme cold has already caused power outages across the country. While it isn’t clear yet if Macon will experience such outages, it’s good to be prepared.
Before winter weather sets in, be sure to stock up on several days’ worth of medications, bottled water, and nonperishable food items. Battery-powered flashlights, extra batteries and portable phone chargers are also good to have in the event of a power outage.
You should also make sure you have plenty of blankets, coats and other cold weather supplies in your home in case your heat goes out.
Check your heating systems
Check the heating systems in your home before cold weather sets in to make sure it is functional. Be sure to also take a look at the carbon monoxide detectors to prevent poisoning.
Winterize your car
While you should try and avoid car travel during winter weather, there are steps you can take to stay safe if it is unavoidable.
Take your car to a mechanic and have them check the antifreeze, brakes, heater and defroster and tires.
You should also put a ready kit with essential supplies in your trunk. Consider adding a portable cell phone charger, ice scraper, extra blankets, sand for traction and jumper cables as well.
Be careful with antifreeze
Antifreeze, a liquid used to prevent car engines from freezing, is toxic if ingested. Make sure it is stored in a safe place where it won’t spill or be within reach of children or animals.
Keep an eye on alerts
Before and during winter weather, be sure to keep an eye on local, state and national alerts.
Macon-Bibb County sends alerts out to the community through the MBCALERT system. The system sends a message to all registered cell phones, landlines and email addresses. You can sign up for alerts online.
You can hear updates on the weather and any warnings on NOAA Weather Radio, which broadcasts official warnings, watches, forecasts and other information 24/7. You can purchase a NOAA Weather Radio from most retail stores, sporting goods and outdoor outfitters, and online.
