Rain & storms headed for Macon. What the forecast says about unusually warm, wet weekend
Georgians know the struggle that is weather.
70 degrees in January? Well, in Georgia, that doesn’t sound too unusual.
With ever-changing warm to cold temperatures and pop-up storms, Georgia never has a dull week when it comes to the weather.
Last week, we faced arctic blasts that brought frigid cold and busted pipes across the south, but this week, we face quite the opposite.
Let’s see what the forecast says:
Wet with possible severe weather
According to Accuweather, Macon may experience some flooding and heavy downpours this weekend.
“Rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue across the southern tier of the country through the weekend,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys.
High winds could also be an issue, as gusts of up to 70 mph could occur.
The National Weather Service has also issued a flood warning, which will be in effect for the area until Monday. The warning covers the Ocmulgee River near Macon affecting Houston, Monroe, Bibb, Twiggs and Jones counties.
The total amount of rainfall expected is 2-3 inches late Friday evening and into the night. The NWS has advised everyone to take caution and “turn around, don’t drown” when driving. If you are caught driving in heavy rain, it is essential to turn on your headlights, but not your hazard flashers.
Warmer temperatures, too
The temperatures are also a bit of a wildcard this weekend in the Macon area, as residents will see near-record warm temperatures for the month of January.
Average temperatures this time of year in Georgia are typically around 58 degrees, rarely ever reaching above 70 degrees. However, this weekend, we will get a taste of spring, with temperatures reaching around 75 degrees on Saturday.
