Severe thunderstorms are likely to hit Middle Georgia Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

Meteorologist Meredith Wyatt with Peachtree City’s National Weather Service station said that the storms could drop 1-to-2.5 inches of rain on the Middle Georgia area. The rain will likely continue off-and-on throughout the day and into the rest of the week.

Flooding is possible in the area from the large amount of water entering the Ocmulgee River.

Wind gusts Tuesday night will range from 50-to-60 mph while Wednesday’s storms will likely have gusts of 60 mph. The winds will likely cause tree branches to fall and could uproot trees after the soil is saturated with rain.

With the excessive rains, “soil will become more wet and wind could cause some impact,” Wyatt said.

There is also a chance of hail in large parts of Middle Georgia. The hail could be as large as 2 inches in diameter, which is slightly larger than a golf ball.

The forecast could change in the coming hours, Wyatt said. What happens Tuesday night can affect what happens Wednesday morning, so the forecasted storms could be less or more severe than they are projected to be as of now.

“This is an evolving forecast with a lot of moving parts,” Wyatt said.
