The National Weather Service placed Bibb County and Houston County under a tornado watch until 7 p.m. Thursday.

The tornado watch also extends to Peach, Bleckley, Laurens, Jones, Twiggs and Wilkinson counties, according to the NWS Peachtree City office.

Witnesses first saw a tornado in south Georgia near Vienna and Cordele, according to the NWS. Bleckley County was also under tornado warning from about 4:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit Macon Thursday night. The NWS and Bibb County EMA recommend sheltering in place until the tornado watch concludes at 7 p.m.

Several tornadoes hit Georgia recently, including one that damaged the downtown Milledgeville area and took out power throughout Middle Georgia in March.
