Icy week and frigid weekend for Middle GA, but will it snow? What NWS says to expect Christmas Day

Bundle up, Middle Georgia.

Temperatures this Christmas could drop as low as 18 degrees.

For many, a white Christmas is always on the wish list. However, if you’re from Middle Georgia, this wish is one that rarely comes true. Most likely, Christmas snow angels will remain unattainable this year.

While snow may not be in this year’s holiday forecast, surprisingly cold temperatures are.

Weather outlook for the week

In fact, The National Weather Service (NSW) in Peachtree City has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the next seven days for north and central parts of the Peach State.

In the outlook, rain is predicted to begin tonight and continue into the morning on Tuesday, while freezing rain is expected to occur in northeastern parts of Georgia.

Freezing rain is a possibility in some parts of Middle Georgia as well, so travelers are encouraged to be careful on the roads.

The rest of the week will include rain and cold temperatures, but will clear late Thursday or early Friday.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are forecasted to be sunny and chilly, so don’t skip the coat.

Accuweather is predicting lows in the teens this weekend and highs only reaching mid-30s for Saturday and Sunday.

Now, when I first began writing this story, I pondered: “When was the last time it was going to be this cold on Christmas?”

Let’s take a look.

Middle Georgia weather on Christmas in past years

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest Christmas in Macon was in 1983, with the low at 7 degrees and the high at 25 degrees.

What about snow?

Well, we all probably remember 2010’s 0.1” of snow on Christmas. It was just enough to tease Middle Georgians. This Christmas will be colder than that year’s low of 25 degrees.

And here’s something none of us wished for: a hot Christmas Day.

The warmest high was recorded in 2015 and 2016 at 78 degrees. The lows on those Christmases ranged from 61 degrees in 2015 to 46 degrees the following year.

Comment below to let us know the coldest and warmest Christmas you remember.
