Damaging winds and tornadoes possible for Macon, Columbus today. Here’s what to know

Severe weather is ramping up across Georgia today and damaging winds and possible tornadoes are the main threats.

The potential for the worst weather remains the strongest throughout the afternoon hours and into the evening, between 2-6 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, damaging winds are the primary threat in Georgia today. Macon sits at a high risk for winds, while Columbus could see 70 mph winds. Columbus is under a tornado watch until 2 p.m. Baldwin, Bibb, Houston, Peach and Pulaski counties are all under a tornado watch until 7 p.m.

The Columbus to Macon line is also at a low to elevated risk of tornadoes today and a long-track tornado is possible.

“The risk of severe weather through Tuesday evening does not represent an extreme risk for tornadoes, but even a single tornado that strikes a populated area has the potential to lead to loss of life and significant destruction,” says Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.
