Columbus on a budget: Galentine’s edition. How to enjoy a night out with your friends on $25
For the February installment of “Columbus On a Budget,” I ditched the roses and heart-shaped candy and decided to celebrate Galentine’s Day with two of my best lady friends, Emile Menser and Brooke Brantley.
With a budget of $25 and a couple of good sports, I headed to Uptown dive bar, Super Regular, for a little free pool, cheap drinks and the long overdue chance to spend time with two of my favorite women.
What is Galentine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day was first imagined on the popular sitcom, Parks and Recreation and is an annual celebration of platonic relationships among women, typically observed on February 13th.
Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope created the holiday in the show’s second season and it’s now become known as a day that “recognizes and honors female friendships ahead of Valentine’s Day.”
Women with strong female friendships report higher overall life satisfaction, even if they beat you at darts and pool (looking at you, Emilie).
Benefits of good girlfriends
- Lower rates of depression and anxiety
- Lower blood pressure
- Reduced risk of heart disease
- Longer lives with fewer physical impairments
- Healthier habits like exercise and medical checkups
Be in the know
Super Regular gives Midwestern nostalgia with its wood paneling and retro knick-knacks, and the happy hour prices feel like a throwback to times past.
It is a really cool spot, but there are few things you should know before you plan a big night.
- Eat before you go. They don’t have a full menu, but they have nibbles like chips and olives to snack on
- Happy Hour is 4 to 6 pm on weekdays, but the bar stays open until 1 am Monday through Saturday
- Free darts and pool from 4 to 6 pm
- Located at 1239 Broadway, Columbus, GA 31901
The bar has excellent happy hour specials, so if you’re on a tight budget (like I am) it’s a smart spot if you want to be out and about for your Galentine’s celebration.
What I got:
- Super Starter: $7.99 which includes 16oz glass of their house lager Super Lite (Regular Beer) and a shot of, cola-flavored liqueur Eno Amar
- Bowl of classic olives: $5.00
- Photo booth images: $7.00
Emilie and Brooke both started out with the Woo Girl ($7.00 each) cocktail but then found the vodka martini to be a solid choice to follow it up.
The best part about the night was the company, obviously, but the free pool and darts didn’t hurt, even if it turns out I’m really terrible at both.
I did splurge on the photo booth for the memories, and I am really glad I did. The joy of cramming all three of us into that little cubby will last me until the next ladies night, which hopefully won’t be next Galentine’s Day.
The total cost breakdown:
- Drinks and snacks: $12.99
- Photo memento: $7.00
- Tax and tip: $5.01
Total cost: $25.00
Other happy hour deals
- Super Lite beer: $2.99
- Guinness beer: $4.00
- Wine: $6.00
- Cocktails: $7.00
Super Regular may feel like just a neighborhood dive bar, but they also offer “The Regular Shows” for live entertainment and hosts special events like Bingo Night and beverage tastings.
Have any ideas for the “Columbus on a budget” series? What can I do around town for $25 or less?
